Kavalan- A Review

It has been 2 hrs after the movie but still everything looks blur, where ever I turn I can only see the cute Vijay and gorgeous Asin wrapped with a wonderful BGM.I know this is the perfect time to write a short review for the Class Movie ‘Kavalan’. Yesterday night I was not sure if I will have a chance to see Kavalan, whether the movie will release or not. But the only thing that came to my mind for all these questions are Vijay’s words.
“Idhu en project illa idhu en prestige, I don’t want to disappoint my fans on Pongal. “
And Guess what! Vijay crossed all hurdles and released the movie on Pongal 2011 for his beloved (Nenjil Kudiirukum) fans. Salute to u sir, proud to be your fan.
Siddique(The Master):
Kavalan is a remake of Malayalam movie Bodyguard which had Dileep and Nayanthara as lead pair directed by Siddique himself. Siddique has not bothered to tamper the storyline of Bodyguard. He has delivered the same storyline in form of Kavalan but with elements that cannot be done by anyone other than VIJAY (be it the dance or the timing comedy or the fierce fights).
If you are bored by so called sweet love stories, take a break and watch Kavalan and understand what really a ‘SWEET LOVE STORY’ is. The storyline is quiet simple but the sentimental climax is what that crowns the movie .The performance of Vijay and Asin can be described as the best by both of them throughout their film career. A very few directors has the ability to mold the actors according to their script, Siddique Stands in lead among all such directors. Thanks for rediscovering the ACTOR Vijay.

Asin (Pure Acting and performance):
“Nayan had done this role in a grand manner I am trying to justify her performance” said Asin , in Kavalan Press-meet.
Well in reality she has overtaken Nayan by all means.
Wonderful performance!!!Finding a place for Asin in songs was a bit difficult as Songs are part of Bhoomi’s Imagination where he has not had a glimpse of his lady love (Ammu Kutty) till the climax but in songs like ‘Step it up’, ‘Pattam Putchi’ and ‘Yaar adhu’ Asin’s expressions and style was gorgeous. Everyone knows Asin for her acting skill; Siddique has used those features very well and has given her rocking reentry in to Kollywood in a very grand manner. Welcome Back Asin!!!
Vadivelu (The Vedi-Velu):
Siddique is known for his humorous touch to the storyline and Kavalan is no exception to the master’s formula. After a very long time, we got an opportunity to see a movie where comedy track was not separate. Again the master’s touch was evident from your comical expressions. Vadivel’s comedy in this film was as enjoyable as his role in friends. Fans were dying to see such slapstick comedies in his movies.
“Avare conpuse aitaaru….”
“Parvathi Nambiar”
“Boss Lover Boss”
“Adhey than andha taylorum sonan”
All the above dialogues will be inscribed in Vadivelu’s list of successful comedy dialogues .
Mithra Kuriyan( The beautiful demoness):
She carried her performance gracefully as in Malayalam version and in fact earned the wrath of audience in the last 15 mins. It is easy to portray one as a good character but playing the good role and astonishing the crowd with a villainous portrayal is damn difficult and she has succeeded in this character which was evident from the claps after the hug scene in the theater.
RajKiran( The Godfather):
Be it emotional acting or a fierce fighting scene Rajkiran has always been a better actor in these two scenarios since Nandha Times. In kavalan, No one could have fitted so well in the shoes of MuthuRamalingam except for Rajkiran. His role was respectable and did have a good look in the climax scenes. Wonderful selection by Siddique.
Vidyasagar: (A centurion)
Vidyasagar is well known for his melodies touch and the album of Kavalan was no exception. But the BGM used in the movie along with variety of symphonies here and there was indeed a great plus to the movie. Every romantic touch in movies are not based on location (sets) but based on the beautiful BGMs and Vidyasagar’s BGM holds the maximum number of shares in the success of the Romantic Movie –Kavalan.
Choreography:
After a song is made for a Vijay movie, Compared to the directors the choreographers do a very hard work to come up with hard and tough steps so that they can make the song look more enjoyable and also they can train the dancing legend a few steps.
Step it up – Amazing steps and lovely expressions
Pattam putchi – Marvelous (Both the getup and the choreography)
Vinnai Kapan – Enjoyable
Sada Sada – Fantabulous (Getup, location and choreography )
Yaar adhu – The best choreography I have seen in recent times. A very few choreographers have accomplished the feat of not making Vijay dance for a song. The one that comes to everyone’s mind is the ever classic “Ennai thalata Varuvala” .’Yaar adhu’ will be remembered as the latest version of “Ennai thalata Varuvala”.
Cinematography:
Camera was wonderfully handles by Ekambaram. Be it the close-up shots that revealed the performance of the actors or be in the long shot that gives a landscape view to the song, hats off to cameraman for giving the best outlook of what Siddique had in mind.
Did I forget anyone???
Oops!!! Don’t mistake me for not writing about the Young General involved in this Film, I have decided to write a separate review for Thalaivar. But I am informed to keep my review short and crisp. So here it goes…
Vijay (Young general):
Ilayathalapathy, once remembered as a Romeo, Shahjahan, a chocolate boy changed his course and entered the mass hero image. When his fans where looking for a small change the Leopard leaped backwards into its former role (Lover boy) and amazed everyone with a stunning performance and won all hearts with his cute expressions. Many commented that it was like seeing ‘Thulatha manamum thullum’,’Kushi’,’Kadhaluku Mariyadhai’ Vijay back in screen, but I feel like seeing a never before seen Vijay.
His timing comedy and scenes with Vadivelu were a real highlight to the movie. Vijay’s comical touch did the magic.
Vijay has been torn apart by critics citing his film’s formula during each movie release
“A Kuthu Mass Number, a intro song, unrealistic fights and a heroine to fill in for duets”
But Vijay has given a proper reply to all his critics with Kavalan even without a single punch line.
Vijay’s expression and acting needs a special paragraph in my short review. His expressions for the song ‘Yaar adhu ‘ ,’Sada sada’ were the best till date .The successful on screen pair Asin-Vijay mesmerized everyone YET AGAIN with their amazing ON SCREEN CHEMISRY.
“Aasa patu varadhuku idhu panam illa, gunam”
“Enakaga neenga rendu perum pray panikonga”
“Oru All the best kuda kidayadha”
“Nan than avala iniku ponnu paka poren”
“Azhagu mugathule illa”
“Avalu ishtam en mela”
“Life le oru change Venum le”
Gosh! I don’t want to jolt down all wonderful dialogues of Kavalan but the style in which Vijay delivered these dialogues made everyone raise their eyebrow and give a standing ovation.
Vijay opts out of 3 IdiotsVijay’s expression when he expresses his love to Asin in the park did touch many hearts including Asin’s.
One can experience ultimate acting in the climax where there is no exchange of words, but just two pair of glistering eyes.
An Actor is one who can make u laugh, who can make u cry, who can make u love and who can make u feel his emotions - I found one such actor today and I am proud to be his fan.
Vijay Rulez
“Kai ala anakati thaduka nan onum Kalvai ilada Kaataru”
This dialogue is for all unseen and seen forces that tried to suppress Kavalan. Thanks to all cinema fans who helped and supported Vijay for making the movie available on Pongal 2011.Vijay indeed proved to be a real KAVALAN for this movie(Both acting-wise and release-wise).
Bottom Line:
Want to have some thing sweeter than Sakara pongal, visit your nearest theater where Kavalan is running.
Kavalan- The Perfect Family Entertainer
“Indha pongal namaluku super Collection ma”
